HISTORY MOUNT MANIPUR NATIONAL PARK

Mount Manipur National Park, earlier known as Mount Harriet National Park, has strong historical significance from the British colonial period.

During British rule, the area was used as a punishment and confinement site for Indian freedom fighters. Many freedom fighters from Manipur were imprisoned in the Andaman Islands after the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.

In recognition of their sacrifice, the Government of India renamed Mount Harriet National Park as Mount Manipur National Park in 2021 to honor the brave freedom fighters of Manipur.

The park therefore represents both natural beauty and an important chapter in India’s freedom struggle.
