History of Cellular Jail (Kalapani

Cellular Jail, also known as Kalapani, is a historic prison located in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was built by the British between 1896 and 1906 to imprison Indian freedom fighters.

The jail was designed with seven wings radiating from a central watchtower, ensuring complete isolation of prisoners. Freedom fighters were kept in solitary confinement and subjected to harsh punishments.

Many great leaders like Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and others were imprisoned here. Cellular Jail stands today as a symbol of sacrifice, courage, and Indiaโ€™s struggle for independence.

Construction of Cellular Jail

Built: 1896โ€“1906

Design: Three-story, seven-wing structure radiating from a central tower

Cells: 663 solitary confinement cells

Cell Size: 13.5 ft ร— 7 ft with iron grill doors

Ventilation: Small high windows (3 ft ร— 1 ft)

Central Tower: Prevented prisoner communication

Construction: 20,000 cu ft stone, 3 million bricks, built by 600 forced labor convicts

Revolutionary Prisoners & Their Struggles

At the Cellular Jail, many prominent freedom fighters were imprisoned, including Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Ganesh Damodar Savarkar, along with revolutionaries from major conspiracy cases and movements.

They endured harsh torture and forced labor, making the jail a lasting symbol of resistance and sacrifice in Indiaโ€™s freedom struggle.
