Cellular Jail, also known as Kalapani, is a historic prison located in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was built by the British between 1896 and 1906 to imprison Indian freedom fighters.
The jail was designed with seven wings radiating from a central watchtower, ensuring complete isolation of prisoners. Freedom fighters were kept in solitary confinement and subjected to harsh punishments.
Many great leaders like Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and others were imprisoned here. Cellular Jail stands today as a symbol of sacrifice, courage, and Indiaโs struggle for independence.
